Shalem Scholars Provide Analysis and Commentary on War in Gaza
In January 2009, as Israel faced the multifaceted and painful challenge of confronting the Hamas regime in Gaza, it sought to clarify its message to itself, to foreign governments and to the rest of the world. Shalem scholars delivered daily, in-depth and up to date analysis on Israel's situation and what was truly at stake for the Jewish state.
Natan Sharansky is an internationally renowned human rights activist, political leader, and author. He is currently chairman of the Jewish Agency, a position he assumed on June 25, 2009. In January 2009, he was the chairman of the Shalem Center's Institute for Strategic Studies as well as a distinguished fellow. Sharansky's award-winning books, Fear No Evil (1988) and The Case for Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror (2004) are critically acclaimed best sellers in Israel and around the world.

Daniel Polisar is the president of the Shalem Center. He is among the founders of the Center, a Jerusalem-based research and educational institute, and has served during the past decade as research director, academic director, editor-in-chief of the Center’s journal, Azure, and, since 2002, as president.

Michael Oren is currently Israeli Ambassador to the United States. In January 2009, he was a Distinguished Fellow at the Shalem Center. Oren is a best selling historian, author of the New York Times best sellers Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East, and Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East, 1776 to the Present. In addition to his regular columns in major US and Israeli media, he has served as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces, and was an army spokesman in the second Lebanon War.

In January 2009, Yossi Klein Halevi was a Senior Fellow at the Shalem Center. He is the Israel correspondent of the New Republic, author of two books, and has been a columnist for the Jerusalem Post, a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times, and a frequent guest on CNN and other national and international broadcast media. Halevi is currently writing a book about the Israeli paratroopers who reunited Jerusalem in 1967.

Daniel Gordis is Senior Vice President of the Shalem Center, where he is also a senior fellow. The author of numerous books on Jewish thought and currents in Israel, Gordis was the founding dean of the Ziegler Rabbinical School at the University of Judaism.
