The Undergraduate Program

The Shalem Center offers a wide array of weekly courses for more than 100 top Israeli undergraduates seeking a more intellectually rigorous, philosophically diverse, and personalized educational experience than is typically found at Israeli universities. Taught by Shalem Center scholars and associates, the program's smaller classes are designed to foster a unique sense of intellectual community. The curriculum places a premium on the development of strong writing skills and takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of philosophy, politics, and religion. We hope our efforts will lead to the opening of Shalem College, a college devoted to preparing Israel’s finest leaders and thinkers.

Courses have included: The Enlightenment and its Critics; The Political and Legal Thought of Aharon Barak, President of Israel's Supreme Court; Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France; Contemporary Conservative Thought; The Politics of the Talmud; and Economics: Foundations and Applications in Israel.

Undergraduate classes are taught in Hebrew and graduate courses in English, but students are welcome to enroll in either level.

In addition to courses, Shalem Center students have the option of joining Shalem staff and guests at weekly social events and at special programs, including movie nights with discussions led by Shalem scholars like Senior Fellow Michael Oren.
