Shalem Scholars Provide Analysis, Commentary on War in Gaza
January 5, 2009 | 9 Tevet, 5769
Dear Friends,
As Israel's unprecedented operation against Hamas in Gaza unfolds, many around the world are filled with questions and concern over its potential outcome. Shalem scholars deliver daily, in-depth and up to date analysis on the military and diplomatic situation. Among them, Distinguished Fellow Michael Oren and Senior Fellow at the Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies Yossi Klein Halevi have been front and center in the media, offering nuanced commentary on Israel's difficult position. In fact, Sunday January 4, 2009 saw Shalem scholars once again author lead opinion pieces in the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post. Yossi Klein Halevi’s piece in the Post, ‘As My Son Goes to War, I am Fully Israeli At Last’ is uniquely moving and powerful and has been reproduced this morning as the front cover of the Jerusalem Post’s Comment & Features section. An op-ed co-authored by Yossi and Michael in the Wall Street Journal (December 29, 2008) was cited by the paper’s own editorial and elsewhere. As of Sunday morning, January 4, 2009 Michael Oren was called once again to serve in the IDF. You can read ‘Back to the Front’ from the New Republic and all the Articles mentioned, at a new page dealing with the conflict at our web site. Click here to access:
On this page you’ll also find a link to a brand new essay by Shalem Senior Vice President and Senior Fellow, Daniel Gordis, ‘An Anthem and a Caterpillar,’ as well as commentary by Adelson Institute scholar David Keyes, and trenchant historical analysis by Martin Kramer.
Shalem friends and supporters have been joining our scholars for live conference calls. Last Tuesday, December 30, 2008, Michael Oren offered unprecedented insight and analysis and we are pleased to make a recording of the call available. Click here to listen. If you would like information on becoming a Shalem supporter, with benefits that include participating in calls like this, please contact Shalem Director of Leadership Development Baylene Wacks at baylenew@shalem.org.il. Martin Kramer, Senior Fellow at Shalem’s Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies and an authority on contemporary Islam and Arab politics will host the next briefing this Tuesday January 6, 2009. Please contact Baylene above for details on how to participate.
In July 2007, the Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies convened to discuss the implications of turmoil in Gaza. You’ll find links to video and analysis from that conference at our site as well.
We are glad to count you among those interested in receiving the latest analysis on the current challenges facing Israel. Our writers and thinkers are at the forefront of the effort to articulate Israel’s predicament to the world, and we thank you for taking the time to read and share their ideas.
