Micha’el M. Tanchum (Rindner)

Micha’el M. Tanchum earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University where he conducted comparative research on issues of religion, national identity, state ideology, and governance. Dr. Tanchum was a fellow in National Security at Harvard’s John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies and a fellow at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Proficient in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, and Swahili and trained in Islamic studies, he employs sociological and anthropological methods to examine the interaction between religion and politics in contemporary Muslim societies.  He has taught several courses in his areas of expertise at Harvard and elsewhere. He has lectured in the broader policy community in the United States, including a public presentation at the U.S. Department of State entitled: “Pakistan: The Deobandi Movement, Islamic activism, and Jihad.” Dr. Tanchum also examines issues of religion, identity, ideology, and governance in Israel.  He is writing a book on the ideals of republicanism in the Zionist vision of David Ben Gurion.
